Profile: Spoon Winterton

Ben "Spoon" Winterton is a comedian who has taken geek culture and made it funny for normal people. He has become famous for his energetic, involving performance style, which always subverts expectation and gives an original slant on things. Though never one to shy away from the dark side of comedy, Ben always aims to perform material that is accessible and enjoyable for anyone who is willing to listen.

In terms of influences, Ben gets a lot of inspiration from internet culture, video games, and his university literary studies. He greatly admires the comic actors Peter Sellers and Alec Guinness, and seeks to replicate that energy and originality in his own work. He has also been influenced by various elements of comedians as diverse as Groucho Marx, Paul Merton, Jack Dee, Bill Hicks, Rich Hall, Mark Watson, Ross Noble, Steven Wright, Rowan Atkinson and Lee Mack.

Ben has been performing various incarnations of his stand-up since mid-2008, over which time his style has evolved greatly. In that time he has done dozens of spots in Lancaster, York, Middlesborough, Lincoln and a field in the middle of nowhere. He has also founded the Lancaster University Comedy Institute For Amateurs (LUCIFA), of which he is currently President. He also writes for the gaming blog "103percentcomplete", produces short comedy films, writes sketches, performs improv, regularly appears on the radio panel show "Talk of the Devil", and has recently starting teaching rookies how to write and perform their own stand-up.
